EV Charger Incentives

While EVs have a higher upfront cost, British Columbia’s CleanBC Go Electric program is making EVs and EV charger stations more affordable than ever. Here is what you need if you plan to buy one and install an EV charging station.

More and more Greater Vancouver residents are choosing to drive EVs (electric vehicles). Car buyers can now purchase an all-electric vehicle from more than 15 manufacturers, including BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, MINI, Nissan, Porsche, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo.

EV Car Rebates

If you’re buying or leasing a new EV in B.C., you have the following rebate options:

  • Up to $4,000 for a new battery electric vehicle or extended-range electric vehicle
  • Up to $2,000 for a new plug-in hybrid vehicle
  • Up to $4,000 for a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle

Note that not all vehicles are eligible for these rebates. Cars must have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $55,000 or less, while larger vehicles must have an MSRP of no more than $70,000.

EV Charger Station Rebates

Rebates are also available for EV charger stations.

  • Homeowners installing Level 2 EV chargers can obtain a rebate for up to 50% of purchase and installation costs (with a maximum rebate of $350).
  • Apartment and condo buildings can take advantage of the EV Ready option. It covers an EV Ready plan for your building (up to $3,000), electrical infrastructure for designated parking stalls (up to $600 per stall), and chargers (up to $1,400 per charger). Alternatively, they can choose a simple EV charger rebate (up to $2,000 per charger).
  • Workplace incentives are also available, up to a maximum of $2,000 per charger.

Keep in mind: it is wise to explore these options with your electrician before you spend the time applying for rebates and purchasing equipment. You need to find out what charger(s) will meet your needs and work with your existing infrastructure.

Rebate Eligibility

Residential rebates are available to B.C. residents who have a valid B.C. driver’s licence and meet the income requirements at the time of their application (a maximum of $100,000 individual total income or $165,000 household total income).

The Application Process

You’ll need the following items to complete your individual application:

  • Social Insurance Number
  • B.C. Driver’s Licence
  • B.C. Services Card app
  • You’ll also need to provide CRA income disclosure consent so that your income statements can be confirmed.

If you’re making a household application, your spouse or common-law partner will also need to confirm their identity and provide CRA income disclosure consent. However, they do not need to have a driver’s licence.

Assuming you’re eligible, you will receive an email approval within three weeks. Once you receive that email, you’re ready to purchase your car. Simply bring your B.C. driver’s licence with you to the dealership: they will apply your rebate at the time of purchase.

Why Switch to an EV?

Beyond rebates, there are several reasons to consider ditching your gas vehicle for an EV:

  • The average B.C. driver saves $2,500 per on fuel costs when driving an EV
  • Driving an EV will reduce local air pollution and carbon emissions
  • B.C. has one of the largest networks of charging stations, so you can travel without worry

If you are ready to buy an EV or install an EV charging station, our electricians can help you assess your options and make the best choice that will minimize your charging time without creating other complications.
